Chapter 6

Sunday morning, before I had a chance to start worrying, Nick texted me. Need to do some preparation. Are you and Jimmy available?

Jimmy had finished his homework and spent most of the night watching movies with Liz. He could sleep in the car.

Yes.

His reply came within seconds of sending mine, as if he’d had it ready to send as soon as my affirmation came through. Meet me at Cheese and All at One. The reception is poor where we’re going.

Cheese and All was a diner near Johann’s property. Since Jimmy had started his job, I’d been there twice. The food wasn’t bad, but I didn’t think that was the reason for the rendezvous.

Chasing Jimmy out of bed and into the shower took the better part of an hour. Noir settled on his lap in the car and both of them went to sleep as soon as we started moving. He and Liz had been up far later than they’d promised. Again.

Nick’s pickup waited in the parking lot of the restaurant. He leaned against the door, sipping a hot drink. The smell of coffee hit me as I got out and left Jimmy slouched in the passenger seat, snoozing. He’d zipped Noir into his coat at my request and had his arms cradled around the lump.

“What are we going to be doing?” I asked.

He grinned at me, his expression more wry than normal. His eyes seemed tired. “We’re building a blind. The crew is in Columbus right now. I’ve got a friend watching them and keeping me updated. The crew has looked over the site—the place where the show’s going to shoot the segment on ghosts has all their tracks. I scouted in the woods around the clearing, and I found other tracks—the crew is being observed by people with very good woodcraft. I can’t tell what they are, but I’m treating this as a hazardous situation. So we’re going to build a place where we can spy on the filming that’s separate from the house that Johann has on the hill. That will be observed by anyone with half a brain, and surely a production team with a show this popular knows a few things.”

This was genius. “So, a hunting blind kind of thing?”

Nick looked a little proud of himself, as he should have. “Yes. That’s why I asked you to bring Jimmy. He needs more exercise.”

I swallowed a nervous laugh. “This will be fun.”

Building the blind meant working in the chill for several hours with Jimmy complaining nonstop. He still did the work, but after a while I started fantasizing about gags.

Noir perched on one of the bare branches, moving occasionally and dislodging snow on top of us. The cold didn’t seem to bother him as much as I expected it might. He just liked being cozy inside our coats.

“Why are we doing this? Just drive ten minutes and get Santo or Vittorio and this would be done in a snap.” The whine in Jimmy’s voice was pronounced.

Nick patted down the edge of the blind.
